in outlook and outlook express you need to choose a server type of HTTP, not pop3

when you create an account in outlook the first question asked is the server type. its there that you choose HTTP rather than pop3 or imap etc
unfortunately your spam filter is not going to work with hotmail if it is expecting a pop3 and smtp server for incoming and outgoing server because, simply, hotmail does not support it.

hotmail has an 'unwanted mail' filter itself that you can set up through their webmail site though.
You can set it to different 'security' levels.... of which i only find the last one good... you can set it to discard or unwanted mail or to deliver it to you 'bulk mail' folder etc etc.
It will use those settings even if you use your hotmail acount via outlook or outlook express.

It does support hotmail because it says on my spam filter software that it supports hotmail. |

I don't know about your spam filter software but I do have the extras service on one of my hotmail account ($14.99/year) and I guarantee you there is still no pop3 access so I can only presume from that, that your software uses HTTP access in the same way that outlook and outlook express does.
as vlam mentions though, hotmail does have some spam protection built in which is also worth checking out

ok I just checked their FAQ, it says
Will SpamEater work with web based email services such as Hotmail?
Chris Stone
Yes, but to use SpamEater Pro with web based email accounts (such as Hotmail.com), additional software is needed.
Please check the Requirements page on our site at http://www.spameaterpro.com/requirements.asp for links to the sites of software that can do this for you.
so check that out
