Hey everyone. Im having some trouble with making a decision. Someone wants to sell me there t616 phone which they bought from cingular. It is really scratched though on the top part, like the screen area. I want to know if ANYONE who has a Sony Ericsson T616 phone From CINGULAR was able to change the faceplate. I dont want to buy it for 100.00 and not be able to change the faceplate on it because it is really scratched. Please let me know thanks.

You might be able to find a faceplate somewhere like ebay or from themselves.

The t616 is the same fone as the t610 and t618. The 'brand' isn't really any physical diff (except for the 850/900 bands); you could use any t610 faceplate for your fone.

so what your saying is that i can get a faceplate for it and it doesnt matter that its from cingular? |

another thing...the scratches are all on the front part, like the screen. If i buy a faceplate is it like buying a new screen. so the scratches arent on the actual lcd screen. so if i buy a plane black one or blue one there will be no more scratches? |

Exactly. Any faceplate that is compatible with the t610/t616/t618 series will do the trick. However, about the screen--i don't know if you can get a replacement screen cover. If you go to any of the mobile fone shops around you area, they should have this kind of stuff. So visit a few places, ask around, and if you like what you see then go and buy the fone from your friend, then replace to covers
T610 retail is ~300 dollars, so if you can find good replacement covers then you're getting a pretty good deal.

so what ur saying is that when u take the faceplate off, it wont take like a plastic screen with it too. so the scratches will still be there? |

thanks for posting that pic!
OK now i can xplain--You can buy a t610 casing (front and back, plus the screen cover) on ebay for about 15-20 bucks , then install it yourself (instructions for taking apart ur fone are somewhere on this site).
you can also take the fone to a SE service center, and they will replace the screen cover for about 25 bucks.
If you send it to you carrier, the work will cost upwards of 50 bucks, so dont.
IMPORTANT
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Also, lets have a little more info. What provider are you planning to use, and in what area of the U.S.?

i live in southern california. im gunna use it on the cingular network. but i dont know like i can go down to the cell shop. they have like faceplates for it. i didnt know if it would fix the problem. i think when you buy a faceplate it comes with the front and back cover. so then the new screen cover should be new and not scratched right? |

Oh ok if you're going to use it on the same network, then its fine. Make sure you find the faceplates AND it has the screen, too. Some faceplates don't have the replacement screen.
The reason why i asked about what network you were going to use it on was becos the t616 was designed to use the 850/1800/1900 bands (but in so cali we use the 850 band). If, for example, you were going to use it for t-mobile, it would be incompatible because t-mobile uses the t610 (900/1800/1900) GSM bands. Also there are some 'unlocking' issues with using the same fone for different (albeit compatible) networks.

I just bought my T616 NEW fom Cingular for $99.00 ($149 - $50 rebate). Why buy used (and scratched) for the same price unless you want to hack the phone? Also, Writeright screen protectors work wonders. The screen on my old phone still looks like new!
