The Bellsouth Text Messaging Communicator is a rather interesting idea. Take a non-cellular handset and attach it to a 10 mile range GMRS and Family Radio service (part of the CB radio spectrum) with the facility to send and receive voice and text messages without charges. Due out any moment now in the US.
