I recommend reading the May issue of Laptop Magazine where they review the cellular providers in the US. I summarized the findings below.....GSM providers are in bold.
Overall Score (out of 10):
Verizon 8
Cingular 7.5
T-Mobile 7
Sprint 6.5
Nextel 6
AT&T 5.5
Sound Quality (out of 5):
Verizon 4.5
T-Mobile 4
Sprint 2.9
Cingular 2.7
Nextel 2
AT&T 1.7
Average Connection Time (seconds until first ring):
Sprint 2.5
Verizon 2.5
T-Mobile 2.9
Nextel 3.1
Cingular 3.3
AT&T 3.6
Reliability:
Cingular 100%
T-Mobile 100%
Sprint 93%
Nextel 89%
Verizon 89%
AT&T 82%
Remember that the GSM providers are AT&T, Cingular, and T-Mobile.
My personal US GSM experience is that T-Mobile is the cheapest and have the best customer service. Cingular has better coverage than T-Mobile and AT&T sucks the most.

Your sound quality tests are flawed, in my opinion.
It is commonly known that GSM has a better, more life-like sound quality than CDMA but you rated Verizon (CDMA & Analog) as 4.5 where T-Mobile (GSM) is 4.
How scientific is this? Are you sure your results aren't biased?

These are not my findings. I just quoted what was reported in the "Laptop Magazine". Of course, one provider can be better in one area than another....they generalized their findings. Certainly it would be impossible to make a 100% accurate test.
However, I thought their findings were pretty similar to my own opinion. We all know that AT&T sucks.

Yeah, I noticed the source immediately after I posted. I just didn't care enough to edit... Sorry about that.

I also think t-mobile is the best. They have the best coverage in Chicago bar none. The plans are great. Especially buddytime. But most importantly, the are the only provider with which i can send international sms. I can always reach my friends in croatia, france, germany, uk and elsewhere. And they just use the 1900 band. So i don't need a different phone for that 850 sh:t.

Att wireless is by far the worst gsm service provider in America. I was a subscriber to their services for 1 horrible year. Their customer service is horrible and reception is worse.
Customers in the US were recently given the option to keep their existing numbers when switching cell phone carriers. Att wireless reported losses because costumers were fed up with paying higher prices for inferior service. I now have t-mobile and i'm very happy with with my carrier.

That is why AT&T are so happy being taken over by Cingular.
