Now that you mention it. Isn't it a CIF camera the T610 got, VGA that P800/P900/K700 got, and CCD that digital cameras got? But this isn't my area either...

Okay... so let me get this straight, CCD are megapixel cams mostly used on digital cameras?
...I'm frightened by what I see but somehow I know that there's much more to come. Immobilized by my fear and soon to be blinded by tears. I know I can stop the pain if I will it all away...

Not all digital cameras use CCD - though most do.

vga, cif, svga etc are the resolutions
vga-640*480
cif: 288*352
ccd and cmos are the chips (technology)
i think cmos is the better technology (at least it's the technology that is in most dslr-s)
vgta is better than cif and so is xga better than vga etc etc.....
anyway you can have a phone with a ccd chip plus a vga resolution so you can't really compare this things it's like oranges and apples...

well really it's like comparing apples and oranges (ccd and cmos) you simply can't say which is better, you can't say that canon eos 300d is worse than sony f828 because it has a cmos 6.3mp comparing to 8mp ccd.....
so many things are important in a camera that you should NEVER only focus in a chip or a resolution alone.....

Technical merits aside, CCD in most cameras (and cameraphones) offer better picture quality although CMOS is supposed to be able to capture pictures faster. Again, this depends on the rest of the technology used in the whole camera.

VGA is just the size of the CCD/CMOS sensor (that captures the picture). Higher (mega) pixels produce higher resolution, see Sharp
GX-30 as the current high-end GSM cameraphone. A proper optical zoom would be good as digital zoom sacrifices resolution and clarity, Sony may help if they introduce the sideways mounted zoom lens technology from their DSC-T1 digital cameras.

What you really need for good picture quality now is (auto) focusing as well as the mega-pixels. That will probably appear in a year's time for GSM along with 2 mega-pixel plus cameraphones.

The devil is also in the optics. The higher resolution may not provide better quality with the same blurry lens with no autofocus
