LONDON (AFP) - Oscar-winning film star Kevin Spacey (news) said he felt like a fool when a youth stole his mobile phone while he was out walking his dog in the early morning hours.
Spacey, whose debut season as artistic director of London's Old Vic Theatre Company begins this fall, said he bumped his head when he tripped over his pet as he chased the young mugger in a south London park on Saturday.
"What actually happened is, I fell for a con," he told BBC radio. "And I was, I think, incredibly embarrassed by it -- some sob story about somebody needing to call their mother and could they use my phone."
"It was such a good con. I actually dialled the number myself, and when somebody answered I then finally handed (over) my phone. And this kid took off and I was so upset I ran after him."
"I tripped up over my dog," he continued, "and I ended up falling on to the street and hitting myself in the head... I'm extremely upset. I feel like the biggest fool that has ever lived."
Spacey said he immediately went to a nearby police station, hoping that they could promptly nab the youth, then went to hospital to have his wounded head looked at.
But he added that, after a couple of hours' sleep, he went back to the police and dropped his complaint, saying "there is a difference between assault and theft ... I got taken by the oldest con going".
Asked what he was doing in the park, next to the Imperial War Museum, at 4 am (0300 GMT) on Saturday, he replied: "My doggy had to go!"
The Metropolitan Police confirmed the incident, adding that Spacey had withdrawn the allegation and that "this is the end of it from our point of view".
Stealing mobile phones is one of the most common crimes in public places in London, with police ad campaign urging citizens to keep them out of sight as much as possible when they are out and about.
Spacey, 44, has won Academy Awards (news - web sites) for his roles in "The Usual Suspects" and "American Beauty". The breed of his dog was not known.
