BRICK, N.J. -- Around sunrise Wednesday, Atara Sasoon became a mother, giving birth in the back of a car on the way to a hospital. Moments later, she also became a widow.
Police said moments after Atara Sasoon gave birth in the car, her husband, who was driving, lost control of the car. It veered into a utility pole, killing Binyhmin Sasoon, 22, instantly and leaving his wife and son seriously injured, the newborn struggling to breathe.
Late Thursday, the newborn boy and Atara Sasoon, 22, were hospitalized in fair condition. The baby did not have a name yet Thursday.
The force of the crash severed the umbilical cord as Sasoon was thrown from the car onto the side of Route 88, police said. She flagged down a passing driver who resuscitated her newborn as a 911 operator guided the man over his cell phone.
"When God has you driving by for a reason and has you there, you better do what you're supposed to do," said the passerby, Patrick Schlagenhaft, 35.
"It let out a big cough," Schlagenhaft said. "It was the most amazing sound ever."
The couple were about a mile from the hospital when the accident occurred, police said. Police theorize that Binyhmin Sasoon may have turned to help his wife when the car spun out of control.
