http://www.telstra.com.au/mobile/networks/info/index.htm (telstra Australia with a GSM and CDMA network)

Selecting the Right Network

To help you select the right network we have provided some pointers below.

Digital GSM
GSM typically supports customers who :

primarily use their mobile service within capital cities and metropolitan areas

want good in-building coverage in capital cities and metropolitan areas

need their mobile phone while travelling overseas
Outbound Roaming

GSM also allows access to GPRS using a GPRS compatible handset.

Digital CDMA
CDMA typically supports customers who :

live in capital cities or metropolitan areas but regularly travel outside these areas

want coverage in more places across Australia than any GSM network

live outside of metropolitan areas

as you see. CDMA better coverage outside metropolitan areas

also take a look at: http://www.cellular.co.za/cdma.htm (lots of info about Cellular Technologies)
