Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc. said they would launch MP3 mobile phones this month, a move that is expected to spark new demand from those who want to enjoy digital music.

Korea's mobile carriers have been reluctant to promote MP3 phones since they could hurt wireless data revenues. Subscribers usually download digital music off the mobile Internet for a fee, but MP3 phones will allow direct downloads from PCs without paying a transmission and content fee to mobile service operators.

Samsung, the country's largest mobile phone maker, said it would introduce the Anycall SPH-V4200, a high-end folder type model that comes with the MP3 playback function, a 1.3-million-pixel digital camera, and 96-megabyte internal memory plus an external memory slot, by the end of this month.

Samsung said the model incorporates digital rights management, or DRM, solutions that can block illegal transfers of pirated MP3 music files.

LG said it would offer the LP3000, an MP3 phone that can save 16 music files with its 65-megabyte memory, to LG Telecom Co. this month. The model comes with a 1.3-million-pixel digital camera, dual flat screens, video recording of up to 80 minutes and global positioning system. While Samsung's MP3 phone is expected to be priced at 600,000 won, LG's new model will be sold for 500,000 won due to the absence of an external memory slot.

Korea has 34 million mobile phone users, whose strong appetite for multimedia functions like digital cameras and MP3 compatability is now fueling a drive for the development of more powerful mobile handsets [addsig]
