there's been a couple of questions lately about coverage in these two states. so i popped in a shop today and asked about it. as you can see, coverage in alaska sucks (just anchorage), but is good in hawaii. both are on 1900 only. here is a link to a high resolution scan that i did so you can get a really close look if you want. it's 3218x1646 and 2.86mb.

Thanks, I don't know what I should do. I'm moving back to Hawaii soon but Cingular doesn't offer any phone numbers with Hawaii area code since they only roam over there. Man, and I'm still in contract.

oh damn. well it should be no big deal for you. free long distance and free roaming. so it will be just the same.

Well, yes, I have the nation plan so that's okay. But if I'm going to live there I want to have their area code 808 so people don't have to pay when calling me and to simplify business.

oh hey! if you're moving there and cingular doesn't provide full service i.e. area code and complete roaming to all of the islands, you might be able to get out of the contract with no penelties.

Getting out of the contract will be up to whoever you purchased it from, as in, direct store, independent, telesales, etc. Technically, no one should let you out, but, you never know. Good luck, enjoy the waves. I am rather jealous. |

Yeah, I hope I can get out of the contract as I don't want to have a plan I won't be using. For the record, I bought the phone and signed the contract online if that makes any difference. Should I go to the store that is nearby???

Thank you, slamEVIL for the map. So there is a GSM 1900 coverage in Alaska (by Cingular), though a really tiny one.

@amagab - i know this is going to be hard, but i would suggest sitting down and spending a couple of hours going over the contract. there might be a clause in there somewhere about this particular situation.

Unfortunately, you won't be able to get out of your contract without paying $150.
Cingular used to sell service in Hawaii and even had a call center there until a while ago when they did a spectrum trade and gave Hawaii to AT&T. However, since Cingular bought AT&T, you can just wait for the merger to complete and then change your number. It should be done before the year is up, but that may be too long for you. |
