1- Sturdy leather boots, preferably caked in mud.
2- Sensible wooly socks; beige, black, navy or green.
3- Cotton trousers with enough pockets to lose your map, whistle and sandwiches.
4- Map.
5- Whistle.
6- Sandwiches. (Preferably cheese, banana or peanut butter. No marshmallow spread, you're in the real world now!)
7- Two or three layers of cotton shirts/t-shirts, and a breathable outergarment. Choice of correct outergarment is paramount; it must at least be shower proof. If it says "Peter Storm" or, for the more mature ramblers, "Barbour" on the label, it's a winner.
8- A wooly hat. If it doesn't make your head itch, throw it out and get one that does.
9- A nice pair of binoculars.
10- A copy of Heinzel, Fitter and Parslow's "Birds of Britain and Europe".
11- Thermos containing thick soup (or coffee, depending on duration of ramble).
12- Enough change for a pint of stout or glass of Laphroaig and soft water at the "rambler's inn", or similarly named drinking hole.
13- Midge repellant. If you don't know why, you have never really experienced pain.
14- Day sack. Not to be confused with the larger, technical "backpack", often used by the more serious "hikers" or "hillwalkers". That's about all you need to know really.

Kendal Mint Cake!!! Your not dancing through the countryside my lad!

@switchbitch

Althoush l greatly respect your fine taste concerning Usige Beatha, l feel l must criticise the decided lack of plus fours, a must for any sojourn into our broad sunlit uplands.

It's a ramble my boy, a stout pair of brogues, plus fours, a good set of tweeds and a hip flask are all you need.
