i once got a problem with my display too, what appears to be white dots/uneven color saturation (whatever they call it). not happy with it, i quickly send my phone to the authorised service center (with warranty card that is ) without questions, they replaced a new display for me in less than half a day, F.O.C. ! i suggest u ought to do that, too

I'm not sure how things are done by technicians there in UK, but here in the Philippines, I've had several friends and clients who had their phones repaired and was automatically given a firmware upgrade by the service center. This is a plus if your phone is out of warranty, because you won't have to pay extra for a firmware upgrade.
As for the length of time you won't have your phone with you. That will depend on several factors. The availability of parts, how difficult the job to be done and how many people were ahead of you when you brought in your phone.
