right, just booted rom floppy into dos. Which file should I execute?
Also I did the normal CD boot. After getting the same error, O pressed Alt + f4 to get the log. 'Reading compressed ramdisk:IO-ERROR' seems to be the problem.

On the CD there should be a folder (not sure where, not too familiar with Mandrake) that contains a series of disk images. There should also be a utility called rawrite.exe
You will need two floppies, a 'boot' floppy and a 'root' floppy. The boot floppy just gets the system going and the root floppy contains everything needed to get the setup routines going. The floppy images are targetted at specific hardware/platforms. Choose the one best for you. ie if you don't have PCMCIA don't use that images.
When you have created the images, boot from the 'boot' floppy (not DOS) and insert the 'root' floppy when asked.
Hope this helps. |

thanx xmob. I just had a look around the cd and saw the readme file. Here is the section about booting from a floppy:
3. Make a boot floppy with Windows
If your computer cannot boot from the CDROM and previous methods do
not work, you must make a boot floppy under Windows as follows:
* insert the CDROM, then open the icon "My Computer", right click on
the CDROM drive icon and select "Open"
* go into the "dosutils" directory and double-click on the
"rawwritewin" icon
* insert a blank floppy in the floppy drive
* select "D:\images\cdrom.img" in the "Image File" field (assuming
that your CDROM drive is "D:", otherwise replace "D:" as needed)
* select "A:" in the "Floppy Drive" field then click on "Write".
To begin the installation:
* insert the CDROM in the drive, as well as the boot floppy, then
* restart the computer.
----------------------------
When I do double click on rawwritewin it says that it is 'Not a valid Win32 application'. ARSE

Hmm, is your download checksum okay? That can be one cause of the problem.
Try downloading rawrite from the net, that might be easier. As always Google is a friend
I hope you're not giving up on Linux yet. |

Ejasim:
The problem maybe is your cdr copy is not completely readable by your cd rom drive (some files are not expanded) or your download/burning missed some things. You can try the cdr with other cd rom drive.
Had the same problem once, the original Mandrake disk won't run on my PC (same error, loading 2nd stage ramdisk failure) but it works in other Pcs. I exchanged the disk from the store, try it again and got it working.
