Thinking of buying a Laptop......I got one problem though, I'm not sure what brands are good or not. Have been looking at HP, Fujitsu and Compaq. Since I don't have enough money to buy one with the latest faetures I would like to know which ones to prioritise....USB, Firewire, IR and so on. What would you guys look for. The price range that I'm willing to pay is 10000-18000 sek (800-1500 USD). What should i get to match my T68?

Try a Toshiba. http://www.csd.toshiba.com

it all depends on your needs / job. firewire is great, used in high speed transfer of multimedia data. if your not into it better skip it off since it cost much. usb is a standard nowadways. actually a neccesity since most devices are now in usb format. ir is also nice. i suggest that you buy laptops with docking bay adapter. laptops that has docking bay is slim and weigh less than others. it cost less since it lacks other features like cd rom, ethernet, floppy disk and others. all these features are in the docking bay.

as to brand specific, one thing i could really say is don't buy fujitsu notebooks, it sucks! if you want quality i suggest thinkpad by ibm or dell. these two brands are neck to neck in leadership in notebooks and laptops. thinkpad i believe is by far the best when it comes to quality. and its devices are okay. hot swappable disk / floppy disk. they are pioneering now in wireless lan. but they do cost much.

for alternate, i suggest compaq. though sales of compaq laptop and notebooks are not that good, they do make a hell of a computer. they are slowly getting the edge with the mobile computing arena (thanks to their iPaq). their devices are a bit okay, expansions are available, not that pricy. quality is good. i suggest a presario.

Hot drive allows you to take out the cd drive and put in a cd writer, or a zip drive etc. They have loads of different accessories you can plug into the hotdrive.

like a usb that you can take out and exchange with a new device but it's not an external device. most hotdrives (hot swappable devices) are cd rom, hard drive, floppy drives and extra bat. the think pad had pioneered this technology.

in my opinion, for a thin & weightless one, check
IBM X-series or
SONY VX-series.

Do not need to buy a branded Notebook coz most of the manufacturers purchase the component from the same source, mainly China. I think they are all OK as long as the Notebook vendor provide good software supoorts.
I bought a Generic notebook and I have had my Bios upgraded 8 times, Graphics drivers upgrade 3 times. absolutely no problems at all. Unlike my collegues who use Compaq,HP,Dell, Toshiba etc,, It seems crashes is a built-in feature

Well. I've had a ThinkPad (IBM) for abt 3 years now...
The mother board died after a couple of weeks. The screen had to be changed a couple of months ago. Though, everything was under guarantee, and taken in charge by IBM
The battery life is ridiculous, and it's the 2nd battery I've got. Well, it lasts some 45 minutes without using anything fancy like CD or games or the like...

So I wouldn't recommend IBM. Though, the customer service works fine, and their laptops are really solid (meaning the plastic case etc), and I like the keyboard feel.
One thing: I hate the trackpoint (this little red thing in the middle of the keyboard). It's very easy to use and well placed, but the feeling is really not pleasant, for me at least

You could consider Laptops from Apple. They have a huge battery life (e.g. you can watch a full DVD). The battery lasts 5 hours.

It is a really cool notebook... it has all the features you need with your t68...

Spec.
800>1000 mhz pentium III/celleron 700>850+ mhz

up to 30 gb hardisk (standard 20)
15" screen... supports display modes > 1600x1200
wireless lan
bluetooth
irda
fingerprint security
(cool design) not important, but nice anyway
