If i buy an IrDA can i use it on my T610 and then without changing any settings use it for my Nokia 6100 of does only one type of IrDA work on each phone?

Yes you can do it I did it with my t300 and them just change to a sagem x5 from a friend of mine and it works fine :-D

Almost 100% sure that there is on problems of compatibility on irDa connections
