hmmm... would be quite peaceful with no coverage in the subway, no phones ringing... not that I use my phone whenever I go with the subway, but I do use it sometimes, so it's good that you can use it underground as well

yeah on Friday I have been working at here Deutsche Boerse for 3 (long) years

It is good having the networks accessable underground though becasue although I don't make too many calls I can keep an eye on here

now, if only BA and Qantas would provide such a connection in the air...

Amazing. This country (and some other) wants to have 3G up&running soon and properly (this will take time) and GSM is not even available in the metro after a bit more than a decade of existence!!!
Btw, they should only provide WCDMA on underground, as a marketing argument for 3G, if they want to sell it

FYI, GSM's been available wherever you go in Finland and Sweden for years! It's such a pain to be in US, UK or France or... and not be able to keep a phone call ongoing as soon as you go take the subway/underground/metro (as appropriate ) or not being able to surf the web when commuting via metro is ridiculous!

Anyway, enjoy it!

there was a time when some sort of phone could be used underground. I do recall some system called rabbit (I think) which was provided by one-to-one (I think). This is all very vague but I'm sure it was some sort of home phone which you could take with you and use when near some base station and these were placed on many central london underground platforms and other places around the city.

not sure what happened to that.

anyway else know what I am talking about and can add more info?

London Underground (LU) is in talks with the four main mobile networks to allow mobile access on the Tube network.

Underground networks elsewhere, like Newcastle and Prague, already have full mobile access. But London's 113 mile network of tunnels is likely to be a more challenging project.

A spokeswoman for LU said: "This is something we've been thinking about for some time - we've always been restrained by our customers, because they haven't been keen, but that seems to be changing. Most people are in favour of allowing phone use on platforms and public areas but people are less keen on phones being used on trains."

LU will trial mobile access in one or two deep-level stations to judge customer demand. The company stresss that this is unlikely to be a big money spinner, and it will be guided by the wishes of its customers.

It has not decided what technology to use, but is likely to use the mini aerials, or micro cells, as chosen in Newcastle.
