3D Studio Max is one of the best, but expensive unless you *cough* use file sharing apps *cough, splutter* http://www.discreet.com/3dsmax/

There's a much more basic but fully functional freeware app at:

http://www.pcplus.co.uk/downl[....]rticleid=5548&subsectionid=362

I've been playing with it lately, it's old fashioned and basic but it can produce some reasonable results

another good one is Maya by AliasWaveFront www.alias.com

Maya and 3DMax are good for designing modells for games
there's also a free and lite version of 3DMax, it's called Gmax and it's produced by Discreet, but it doesn't have the rendering functions

for making screenshots Cinema 4D and Lightwave are good
they've got excellent renderers

I have 3ds max 6, maya, lightwave and cinema 4d xl6, 3ds Max is the best of the bunch for object creation and rendering, I use the reactor render engine. I also use Rhinoceros 3 for object creation it is very fast and allows you to build some very complex low poly models.
Computers have allowed Mankind to make more mistakes, quicker than any other invention,

With the possible exceptions of Tequila and Handguns.
