Can someone please explain the costs for using a mobile as a modem.
I'm on Vodafone.

Does it cost: per page/per megabyte/length of connection etc.

And how much does it cost with Vodafone?

Thanks.

depends on what kind of connection, but with dailup it cost the normal local tarrif+costs of the dialup (normaly ISP costs) this is time charged, also possible to use GPRS, that will charge the amount of data used...more on the vodafone site look at mobile internet acces

If you configure your phone to act as a Modem and dial up using GSM then you will be charged by the minute. If you use gprs however then you will be charged by the megabyte.

In the UK, customers on the O2 pay monthly tarif can either pay a data tarif to use gprs or they can dial the 0845 numbers as part of their free minute allowance.

I use aardvaak as my ISP and get my email that way and the calls are effectively free, but gprs is faster if you want to pay by the megabyte.

Dialling up using GSM is easy

Go to your connection profile and select GSM as the carrier rather than GPRS

Then specify the number which in the UK is 0845 662 1509 and a username and password, I use guest and guest and it works ok.

Then when you try and access the Web it will dial the 0845 number and connect. If you are using a P800/900 or similar and want to send emails then just use smtp.smartemail.co.uk as the SMTP server.

You are right about us having better mobile (cellular) services in the UK - we can actually talk to someone at the cellular company - have you ever tried calling AT&T in the US LOL

U can get unlimited internet with T-mobile US. Their 4.99/9.99 plans give u wap access and their 19.99 plan gives you complete internet access (much cheaper than the ATT internet plans - I've been there!).
If u r on the road a lot and want gprs connection using ur phone as modem then this is an alternative.
Life gives u a thousand chances, all u need 2 do is take one. (PA, USA - P900 T-Mobile)

set up a data account on the phone using your ISP's dial up number. In WAP settings -> whatever you have -> Gateway -> IP settings -> Connect using

change it to the data account you've created for your ISP, or select "Always Ask"

Note that your wireless provider may not support GSM data (known as Circuit Switched Data - CSD)
