I know this may not be the right forum for this but I was wondering if any of you could offer some advice.

I want to know if there is size limit that some USB card readers can read. I have a cheap MMC/SD card reader that works fine for my 16MB SD card and my 32MB Sandisk MMC card, but If I try to use my brande new 128MB card (from crucial - http://www.crucial.com/uk/sto[....]Card&Attrib=Package&cat=Flash) then I can read it, but if I try to write files to it, then it writes, say, 3 or 4, then Windows "looses" the disk, then finds it again, then looses it agiain, then finds, it etc etc IE I cant copy anymore files.

The disk works fine in my camera, I just cant write files to it via Windows, to use in my HPM-10.

Would buying a new reader/writer help? Im looking at this one http://www.crucial.com/uk/index.asp?IMODULE=CTR6ACPU2 but dont want to have the same problems.

Incidentally, this problem happened last year, on a 64MB card, but put that down to the card, as it only cost me 9 quid!

Thanks for any advice you may have.

I'm using Win2k on a laptop with a PCMCIA card reader and a 256MB card. You shouldn't have any problem with the one you have. I've even got the original serial card reader to work fine. Maybe it's a problem with your PC - you done a virus check or whatever to see?

I do a regular virus check and keep the my signatures up-to-date so I dont think it is that.

In fact, I tried the reader at work, plugging it straight into a USB2.0 port, and doing the same (at home, I tried the reader plugged into a USB1.1 hub into a USB2.0 port, and then on its own in a different port). A SIMILAR situation occurs but not exactly the same. At work we use Win2K, and when I wirte a file to my MMC card it gets written, but then when I try and delete it, Win2K says thats theres a problem deleting the file.

Ive tried a mates USB1.1 8-in-1 reader (PQI brand I think) and everything works fine. Writes to the card, and then deletes without any problems.

Ive almost certainly put it down to the reader not recognising the card correctly, as its too big. My mate has trouble using 256MB SD cards, he thinks for the same problem, as when he puts them in Windows keeps asking him to formt them, but they work fine in his camera.

Thanks for your reply though. Has anyone else got any thoughts?

What might be happening is the FAT formatting on the card is different from what your computer uses. Most digital cameras us FAT 16 when they format the card. Most computers use FAT 32 which is needed for larger hard drives.

FAT16 will limit access on your card to a certain size making it difficult for your Windows based programs to access the card.

No, i dont think that is because of filesystdm. Wimdows works ok with any FAT. There may be an individual incompartibility with the reader.
