I was wondering if EDGE is fast enough to support voice calls over GPRS. If that is possible, that would be great - think of all that free international calls!

Even ordinary gprs is enough, I tried icqphone if it's voip :)

Yes as pointed out GPRS should be enough already. I mean you can have a voice conversation over 56K, and GPRS is *supposedly* faster than that.

EDGE however would improve the quality of the VoIP connection.

Would it be cheaper? Depends on your teleco. Mine charges 0.5cents (Singapore cents) per KB download. If you are running an EDGE connection, and using all of that bandwidth for a VoIP call, it is still expensive enough...it ain't free unless you have free GRPS/EDGE
