Well, I would assume that there would be software or a driver to support it, just as a CD burner has software and drivers for it. If not, then just try to send something from the laptop and see if any options show up. Also try the control panel.

In the control panel click on wireless link and then click the hardware tab. There you should see the hardware is available and working properly. If it is not its possible that you may need to activate the IR port either in the BIOS or via some setup program that may have come with your pc. Half the laptops I have ever owned came with IR disabled in BIOS by default
if it is listed and working properly then click on the Infrared tab and ensure "Allow others to send files to your computer using infrared communications" is ticked and its useful to have "Display an icon on the taskbar indicating infrared activity" ticked too so you can see what is hapenning
thats all I can think of for now

ok, well I am running XP pro so if you are running XP home maybe its called something different but it must be in control panel as it was there since windows 98
however I just did a quick google and it does appear that the latitude does seem to require you to go into the bios to activate it first. I don't know about DELL but usually when you boot you see a message saying to press F2 or DEL to get into the bios setup although sometimes (like on my sony vaio) even that is hidden from the user.
try that anyway, and I would expect that the manual you received with your pc probably has some details on getting it working too

he'll have to get IR working first and then no other software is required for transferring files! I do it all the time.
I took a look into the Windows XP "Help and Support Centre" which you get to by clicking "start" and then "help and support"
It seems that the wireless link control panel applet only appears when you have an infrared device installed as this is what it says about the wireless link:
Wireless Link overview
After an infrared device is installed, the Wireless Link icon appears in Control Panel. You can use the Wireless Link icon to configure file transfer and image transfer options and then to send files or transfer images quickly and easily over an infrared link.
When another infrared transceiver comes in range, the Wireless Link icon appears on the desktop and on the taskbar. You can then:
o Send files by specifying a location and one or more files in the Wireless Link dialog box. For more information, see Send files with the Wireless Link dialog box.
o Send files by dragging file icons to the Wireless Link icon on the desktop and dropping them there. For more information, see Drag files to an infrared link.
o Transfer images from a digital camera that supports the infrared image transfer (IrTran-P) protocol to your computer. For more information, see Transfer images from a digital camera to your computer.

hey there, i also have a dell latitude laptop running Win 2K pro & could never figure out how to activate the IR. I just booted up, hit F2, and on the 3rd page of options there is an IR option flaged as disabled. I changed it to COM 1. Then i saved & exited & rebooted. Then once it was all loaded up I activated the IR on my T306, pointed it at the IR & it worked just fine!
