I received the following e-mail at work today is this a hoax or can it be done??

Dear all

I got this message from West Midlands Police.
It may be of help to you.

If you receive a call on your mobile from someone saying:
that they are doing a check on your mobile phone and
that you must press #90 or 09#,
then please end the call immediately.

This is a fraud company who are trying to access your Sim card to make
calls,
which will then be charged to your number. This has been verified by
the police.

But it is possible to make fake telecards to refill your phone with units, so then again who know... But it sounds a bit far out, and if someone called you up and said so would you do it??

The message is not a hoax. There are these people that pretend to be working at a cellphone company. They have a SIM card cloning device which can clone your SIM card and make it possible for them to make phone calls that will be charged to your account. However, the only way for them to clone your SIM card is if you press a specific combination of two numbers and a #. Do not ignore the message, just tell them to f**k off and hang up on them. This happened to a lot of people here in Cyprus, so I know.

This is an old scam that was out a few years ago...

You'd phone a big company, pretend you're an phone engineer and ask them to press a certain key combination. Unwittingly this transferred through the pabx so that they can then dial any number they so whished.

But I can't see how it can be done on a mobile...
And I definitely can't see anyone cloning your sim card over a call
