Having some major problems getting my new 610 connected with PC
running Xp SP1
.
Have Installed Mobile Phone Monitor, Image Editor from CD.
Plugged in the phone, up comes an Icon in the systray and the new device wizard pops up with the usual new device found message and want to be pointed to the s/w to install. I can't find anything that tells me where to point it to!!!

I've also had a look round this site and cannot find an answer.
There are some references to the Mobile Phone Monitor - mine just shows
COM1 & COM2. Am I right in thinking that there should be some additional (virtual) COM ports displayed. Are these missing because I've not been able to tell the wizard where the s/w is.

Any help greatly appreciated.

A USB cable requires a software driver for it to work. You did not install the driver.

Once the driver is installed correctly, a new COM port (*LIKELY* COM3) will appear. Then you go into mobile phone phone minitor to ENABLE the new COM port.
