As I understand it.... Orange does not charge you for 0800 numbers in the UK?
If you goto http://www.tiscali.co.uk/services/smarttalk/apply.html?ProdType=1&StartupCode=UK-115070 which is a cheaper than BT land line from Tiscali....and sign up using your land line....you can also registar your orange mobile number....and tiscali give you a 0800 number to route your mobile calls through their Smart talk network...calls are charged to your land line bill....and cost no more than from your home phone....and orange does not charge you.... |

Are you saying this # routing service (tiscali) has rate charges that is equivalent to that of a Lan line? Hmm. How about their monthly service fee? Wouldn’t you still have to pay for you monthly Lan line charges plus those routed calls as well? Moreover, you’d still have to pay Orange their monthly service fee. What if you end up using the same amount of talk minutes as you normally do on your mobile plan vs the time you spend on phone calls routed through that toll free #? No benefit, you’d actually end up spending extra money using this service in that case. I see this as a benefit only to pay as you go customers that aren’t obligated to pay monthly charges. Or if the service didn't require you to have a Lan line.

Good comments...
I think you are right....that the benefits would really come for Pay As You Go users....but at least someone would benefit...
And yes...the calls will be on the land line tariff....charged to their landline...
There is no charge to sign up to it...and you are not tied into any contract either...you can cancel it at anytime...
Oh and there is no service fee on most of the packages....

Cost of Calling 0800/0500 "free" numbers: Free (not from PAYG), except for numbers identified as "calling card access number".
so appears that PAYG do have to pay something....but contract do not...other than what BigFeat mentioned earlier is their contract phone monthly charge.. |

1) Orange is the only UK network where 0800 numbers are STILL free (get your facts right)
2) Tiscali have no monthly rental - you only pay 4 calls
3) Although Orange officially charge for such access numbers some of the Tiscali ones slip through the net
4) Use your inclusive minutes for your mobile calls and all landline and lnternational through Tiscali (remember - unused minutes carry over from month to month)
I have used Tiscali via Orange for a year now and have saved about £40 every month! |

I use alternative providers on 0800 numbers from my Orange phone & have done so for years, i use several companies, 1Tel & Telco, to name two of them. they do NOT charge a monthly fee, jusy your calls which are similar to landline costs.
Now a word about Orange 0800 charging policy;
P A Y G
Since 1998 ish ALL 0800 numbers have been chargable on Pay as you go Orange phones.
OVP
Since earlier this year all 0800's are chargable on OVP style contracts.
Orange YP Contracts, all 0800's are free, exept calling card services, this means your 0800 access number will get a short message put on it when you connect telling you you are being charged, your alternative provider will normally then give out a new number to use, & the chase will continue like this as it will sooner or later also be added to Orange's black list & become a chargable number, also last year WITHOUT WARNING Orange billed everyone for 0800 numbers that were used as access to these services, so they dont have to give you a warning if they dont want to.
Having said all this, i do use these companies & as long as you listen to make sure the Orange "Chargable call" message is not there you should be OK. also remember 0800's are included in free minuutes on many networks & some alternative providers give out a landline (Non 0800) connection number.

Orange is working on making calls to 0800 numbers free. They make agreements with 0800 numbers providers and Orange has some packages where calls to 0800 numbers are free. So it depends on type of package you have. And if you made contract with Orange before this agreement, you have to renew it. |

Orange is actually purchasing all the cabnets/exchanges from BT atm... 0800 will remain free on Pay Monthly (Unless you are on an EQ Tariff) and they actually forsee selling 0800 numbers that you can terminate on your mobile. Mainly projected towards sole traqders I guess.
