dial up data account with cingular service in CA. |

I have Cingular service in the SF bay area. I don't have their wap service, so I tried to set up a dialup data account and use the public gateway as mentioned in many of the threads here. I used my work place's dialup account (for pc) and used the same setting on the T68. When I tried to call the number, I always get 'failed' message almost instantaneously. I could find specific answers using the search here. Can someone please help? Many thanks.

I assume you have gone through the basics. You need to set up a data account first including telephone number, passwords, etc. etc. Then you create a WAP account that references the previously created data account. The message you are getting is usually the result of a mis-configuration. Without knowing your exact settings, it is difficult to help. You might want to go over to howardforums and post there. They have a dedicated Cingular forum. |

Thanks a lot.
Yeah, I went through the basics following others' posts here. I set up the data account exactly the same way I set up my laptop for remote access. Regardless of whether the WAP public gate way setting is correct or not, I don't seem to get through to the data account ISP that I set up. I just wonder if it's possible that my Cingular service doesn't support data connection? Thanks for the advise and I will try out my luck on the Howardforums. Thanks.

I was just wondering, if you use the WAP with a public gateway on the T68, is it free? I mean you obviously use your minutes, but are there any additional charges made to your bill? |

You only use your minutes. In this case, free is free. If you want to post your settings (data and WAP - leave out the personal stuff), I will be happy to try and help you or, you can post at howardforums and I'll set it there.
I also get the "failed" message from time to time as well and I have been using my ISP for ages. To be honest, I think we are both "scaming" the system. From time to time, I think Cingular monitors the phone numbers and if they detect a carrier tone, they will not allow the call to be completed. Afterall, we are supposed to be subscribing to the data services option. For me, it is so infrequently, I never bothered signing up. This is all speculation on my part.

These are great but they won't work for Cingular GSM.

A helpful solution right now may be to just sign up for Cingular's CSD right now since they are offering it free as a promotion that does not expire. There is no monthly cost, it just uses your included minutes the same as a public gateway. This is a great offer to get on board with while its free. |

Yes, you are right to a certain extent (it is free and nice to have). Unfortunately, Cingular is not capable of handling certain, newer technology WAP sites. Consequently, the need for public WAP gateways that do. |

ok, here is the problem- I just resolved it yesterday. you need to set up a wireless internet connection with Cingular which is free. You do it by regestering at mywirelesswindow.com after that they will send you a comfirmation code and you are ready to call your IP. |
