wifi will work through walls but the range is reduced because of it.

However, I have an 802.11g wifi setup with adsl at home in a pretty big house and receive the signal in every room so it should be fine.

mate, its dead easy. you can do it yourself, I did.

I hope you have an ADSL modem with an ethernet connection rather than a USB connection otherwise you'll need a new ADSL modem unless its plugged into a desktop in which case you will have to set up internet connection sharing on that dektop.

assuming you have an adsl modem with ethernet then just plug the ethernet cable into the wireless router. if you have a desktop plug another ether cable (cat 5) from one of the ports on the wireless router into the desktop. If your laptop is running XP then it should find the wireless router when you turn on your wireless network connection without any further action neccessary.

while I don't know about 3com, I have the d-link 624 and you can connect to its software by entering 192.168.0.1 (the standard home networking primary ip address) into a browser and you get to configure the router settings.

In there you should setup the mac address of each pc which is allowed to use the router. this can be found by going to a command prompt on your laptop and typing in the command IPCONFIG /ALL and looking for the physical address. while this helps with security it can be easily broken with software from the net so you should also setup wep encryption keys to make it more secure

give it a go before paying someone else because you'll learn stuff doing it too!
