well you should practice with the search because these answers are all out there (I know because I have answered them myself several times), and the new search available in the last month or so is fantastic.
anyway, to get a firmware upgrade just take the phone to an service centre with proof of purchase date and within one year they will update the firmware for free, in theory. Some service centres are asking you to tell them what is wrong with the phone before they will do it under warranty.
In general settings, pictures, etc are not lost but a few people have said they have lost their sms and a couple of other minor things.

When you buy a phone it have two systems of operating. The first is with the hardware, like does it have a built in camera. How long battery time it has, what kind of screen it has and so on. The other is the thing called software that makes everything work. Just like a computers operating system. You can have win98 win XP and many more. All OS have bugs, to get rid of the bugs you upgrade the OP or in the phones case the software. Sometimes the technicians that develop new software have even added features that dosen't depend on hardware. If your phone dosen't have a built in camera a software upgrade will of course not put one there. But it can put in MMS that dosen't really depend on hardware.
I don't know if this is what you wanted but anyway.
And the software upgrade should not affect your T610 stuff. Things can as always go wrong and it might be deleted but it shouldn't happen and usually dosen't.
Good luck!
