I should buy a new notebook. Wich processor do you recommend me?
In theory the Centrino's are faster than the Pentium's 4 Mobile, but I've heard that this is not true.
Could someone give me an advice or at least tell me wich is faster please?
Thank you in advance,
NetGuy2
EDIT: What I've been looking is a HP zt3000 with Intel Centrino 1'6Ghz.

I haven't actually used a Centrino platform (my girlfriend's laptop is a 2.0 GHz P4) but I remember that the Centrino had received excellent reviews upon launch. Try reading some web-reviews and look at benchmarks. This is what I always do before buying any PC component. And try to diversify the sources of information - some tend to favor certain manufacturers...

Go for the centrino, it uses less energy, is faster in Benchmark tests and has built in wireless. The laptops using centrino usually have longer battery life and are smaller and lighter. But these laptops tend to cost a lot more. |

Once again it really depends on what you want it for. If you want it as a desktop replacement then you should go for the P4. Otherwise, if speed / gaming etc isn't really important to you then i recommend the Centrino.
Bought one of the first Centrino laptops released by Dell for uni. Very impressed with it. It is very quiet, energy efficent, and the speed is liveable. I have a 1.3 Ghz one but i dont know how fast that is in P4 land. For me the lack of the speed offered by the P4 is a liveable sacrafice.
I take it to uni, i am a sloth so i surf the net in bed etc, so i find that the centrino processor works wonders. the battery life is quite good (my one has a small battery capacity) and the fan almost never goes on, never overheats, very silent.
Unfortunately i have yet to use the wireless features. Stupid poor uni not having wi-fi

Thank you for your comments!
I think I'll go for the Centrino 1'6Ghz!
Although, in my father's office they have a Centrino and they say that it's speed is very LOW. But when I read the reviews and look the benchmarks they say that is FAST!

The 1.6 Ghz is how fast your computer is running and is not comparable to the P4 speeds. Its something to do with with the whole comparing with apples and oranges thing...
Just make sure that you get a lappy with a decent graphics card. I made that mistake - no gaming. Boo hoo. |

Definitely without any doubt, Intel Centrino is the best choice here ! |

The computer I'll choose is:
Centrino 1'6Ghz
512 DDR 266
60 Gb 5400rpm
ATI 9200 64 mb (Independent memory)
WIFI b/g + BT + ...
I think it will be really fast!!! and some gaming could be possible

Taking this back.
Well, i'm in the same situation as Netguy.
I'm undecided between a Pentium-4M notebook and a Centrino one.
The specs are the same, the only difference between the two is the processor.
One is a Centrino 1.6 and the other one a P4M 3.2.
I've already searched a bit and got these conclusions:
- Someone who claimed that the 1.6 Centrino processor has the same processing power as a P4M 2.2.
- The main advantage of centrino it's his low consumption, hence, with longer battery time.
- But if you do a lot of HDD work and DVD/CD the lower Centrino consumption is diluted in the drives' consumption, so the battery power will not be that long.
The things that sucks more power is always Screen (TFT), HDD, and DVD/CD drive, and so the processor low consumption won't matter much.
Am I wrong?
Can someone provide me a link with a review comparing the two technologies?
TIA
P.S.-I'm between the Acer Travelmate 4002WLMi and the Acer Aspire 1673WLMi

I'm also about to buy a new laptop as my current Vaio is now 2 years old, although I have upgraded it to 1gb ram and 80gb HDD. As this was my 4th vaio in a row I am of course looking at another vaio, probably the S2VP which does come with a 2ghz centrino compared to my current vaio which has a 2ghz P4M.
the research I have done suggest that for the same value ghz the centrino is more powerful than the P4M and so backs up your comments Krubach.
regarding the high use of HDD or DVD/CD, well it would be the same whether you bought centrino or P4M so that doesn't really come into the equation
my current vaio gets around 3 hours out of the battery but the new one quotes around 5 hours so clearly the centrino is ahead there although I only use the laptop on battery once in a while its still nice to know I can get that much more from it.
personally I haven't done so much research between the two but everything I have read as a casual reader of pc mags etc does suggest that centrino is that way to go now, and that will be my choice.

I have never considered anything but Intel for my own, my family or any company PC's I have been involved with.
I trust Intel 100% although there have been a couple of issues in the past such as the very insignificant maths problem on the original pentium and the PSN (processor serial number) scare

It seems that the test is not yet available on-line.
Could you please post here a comparison of the above processors i mentioned?
Thanks
