Has anyone had luck with sending photos taken with the cam from a T610 to a Palm? Transfer seems to work fine, but once finished my tungsten just says "unknown format".

Same here. I have yet to find a software that will convert file formats (on the fly) so that it is easy to transfer files between and Palm.

Use McFile to 'intercept' the IR and store the photo in the storage card

thats very strange as i have just tested this and it worked for me.i have a t2 and took a pic with my t610 and sent it via bluetooth to the t2 which downloaded it asked me which file i wanted it in,in my photos then opened the pic.
what palm do you both have and how are you sending it

palm photos v1.0 according to the about tab.
can t remember if it was pre loaded or on the cd. it wont accept gifs thats the only thing so far that throws up the error message mentioned
