Just got a response from one of the threads which I authored (Was Jesus Christ really born on December 25th?), unfortunately one of our members cursed/said a bad word upon replying, wherein he could have just said it in a very subtle and educated manner/way. You see I frequently see threads where members cursed at each other when topics being discussed don't favor both camps, really going out of hand. May I suggest therefore that members who 'initiates' saying foul languages be banned 'automatically' for at least a week from joining in the discussion forum? If attitude persist, be banned therefore 'definitely' from Esato.com . I maybe not updated with the site's rules and regulations, but I guess members who curse other 'good' member will be rebuked/punished for the actions/replies they post, all should be held liable for every action they do/say in this forum. Thanks, and may all mod's heed/agree to my request. . .

FORUM RULES

1) No personal attacks or bullying. If you disagree with what someone is saying, then present a mature and intelligent case to prove otherwise. Malicious intent will not be tolerated. What you do over private email is one thing, what you do on our forum is another.

2) No offensive language. Sure, most of us use four letter words in normal conversation without too much thinking, but this forum is about thinking. Words are the clothes in which thought is dressed. And luckily, these threads are cheap (pun intended) so please choose language that reflects the quality of your ideas.

theres two important rules. and it appears quite a lot of people broke them in that thread... including you jojo

I guess this will just be appropriate enough being openly discussed here, so that every member will be aware too, if ever, 'requests' like this one will be approved. If not, then at least, saying of bad languages will be eliminated - gradually and eventually totally. Thanks !

In the spirit of the season I have cleaned up the thread in question a little rather than locking or removing it.

Locking a thread with inapropriate content is not a solution because the topic will remain visible with that inapropriate content. The choices are to remove it completely or moderate it by removing those posts.

I prefer to moderate by keeping topics alive when such heated responses occur, by locking them, waiting a while for people to cool down, then removing the offending or off topic replies and reopening the discussion. I have done this a few times now and it seems to be quite successful when the topic resumes and IMHO is a better solution than losing the topic altogether. Indeed looking at the topic in question now it is already getting more interesting.

Also please be sure to understand that I didn't do it to make anyone look good or bad, I just simply removed the replies which were inapropriate for the thread since the topic as a whole is of interest.

I would say the whole policy is up to laffen. It's his forum.

And I can tell from experience that a PM to laffen quoting the inappropriate content has always resulted in warning and/or ban.

Having that said, I think their is nothing wrong with a thread pointing out the rules to us all once more

Actually it is part of the moderators responsibility to decide how they should moderate the forums and it is a part of their duties to issue warnings. For some issues there are discussions between moderators in the moderators forum to decide the best way to handle those.

For persistant offenders it is then for the moderators to recommend a ban to laffen who is the only one who can actually implement this action.

Whilst I agree in part with the original posters comments, I have to say that I have reservations.

I posted a valid comment to the thread in question, then participated in a bit of 'banter' with one of the other posters. This was, in my opionion, neither aimed at the original poster, nor detrimental to his / her original post.

Believe me, I understand the frustration of posting a serious thread / comment only to be met by bad language and ridicule, but unfortunatley it is an inevitable part of message board culture. Always has been and always will be.

Might I point out that somebody posted a comment in said thread stating, albeit in a round about way, that the post was off-topic. This, in my opinion was valid.

The point i'm trying to make is that anybody who responds in a pious and arrogant manner (such as the initial post in this thread, imo) is simply asking for trouble.

I'm just glad that the moderators of this board seem to have alot more about them than the majority of us posters (me included!)
