I wonder if there are someone who can tell me how the firmware upgrade works?

I talked to a guy at an center who said his upgrade tools connected to a server when it upgrades to new software to check if the firmware is right?

It sounds a little weird to me...

Yes, that is right. When you update a SE, it will check for new software from SE.

He probably meant that it checks the firmware version on your phone against the latest available version that is stored on SE's servers. If the latest version on the servers is newer than the one on your phone, it'll give you the option to upgrade, otherwise It'll say 'upgrade not needed at this time' or similar.

That's how most upgrading systems work anyway, just like Microsoft Windows online update service.

I'm not really sure what is wanted to be known here but in my experience the service centre keeps a copy of firmware on their local pc and the phone is upgraded from that. After notification, or checking SE EMMA web site, if a new firmware becomes available the service centre downloads it from the EMMA server to their local PC.

A few times they have upgraded my phone but it wasn't the latest version so I told them and they checked EMMA and found their was indeed a new version and so downloaded that and upgraded me a second time. These days I just tell them what version I want so they know before hand if they are doing the right one

Sounds good... Thanks!

But if they are trying to upgrade from the Vodafone Live! firmware to the original, will it tell that it's wrong firmware version??

The upgrade at the service centre can be done online, or offline(where the firmware already downloaded on their PC).
