Whatever happened to Globe Telecom ? |

I am from Manila. I used to have a Smart sim - 1995 on my mobile fone. Then I switched to Globe last 1996, just a year later, after seeing almost everyone flocking to their business centers in the malls, and also, after knowing that almost of all of my closest friends and relatives have literally switched too - I made a big decision to change mine as well. During the past years, specially when the colored fones were introduced and emerged like mushrooms in the market and Globe has introduced it's GPRS features to it's clients, I was amazed with awe - just browsing on it's own website. Until the inevitable happened, where their GPRS feature always had a system error. Marketing strategy were always at par back then, but now looks like they run out of funds to introduce new 'gimicks'. Smart is certainly doing great during the past, say, 3 years. I also learned from CNN (about 2 months ago) that one of Globe's major partner in investments here in Manila - the Singtel Co. of Singapore has ceased doling out financial funds for potential additional investments. I just hope that Globe can put back their no. 1 position ASAP as the Phils. no. 1 telecom network before everythings goes out of control. |

Smart is number one according to number of subscribers (that is if you include Talk n Text subscribers who does not really contribute to Smarts bottom line becuase they are Piltel customers just using Smart's network).
Although smart seems to put up more value added services these days (obviously at a cost)... smart is still not profitable... while Globe is. |

Habagat, where did I learn that SMART is no.1 at present? Do you live in the metropolis ? Are you a natural born Filipino? Are you a Filipino citizen as well then? Do you watch TV daily, specially cable ones? Do you go to parties at night which majority are being sponsored by SMART? Do you read your daily newspapers? Have you attended the recently concluded AD Congress held in Baguio City? Have you seen any counterparts of Martin from Globe lately ??? Try answering ALL of these shortlisted Qs of mine and you'll get to answer your Q to me. Instinct my friend, it ALL boils down to INSTINCT !!!

The visibility of smart has a cost to it. Where do you think they get money for all that advertising? Subscriber fees won't be enough... especially when they have to service debt due to earlier network expansion. They'd probably need to borrow more... which would hurt their bottom line if all the advertising don't pay off as well as they expect it to. They are making the people think that they are number one... (in my opinion they aren't but is in the process of doing so if the compentition doesn't shape up).
On the otherhand, Globe seems to be doing some prudent spending now that they're established. They pick their projects carefully... picking the most efficient use of their money. (conservative? This is a trait of most Ayala firms). Unlike SMART who just picks all opportunities available and hope something will work out.
*How do I know these things?... I'm a financial analyst.

Just switched from smart to globe surprisingly they even send a messenger for me to fill up the application yesterday, and I just received a call today saying that they will send the phone thru courier tomorrow or friday, wow what a service! I was very surprised that they have to send a messenger all the way from pioneer to intramuros and to think that I will only get the G talk plus! Well, I hope that they can keep this up! |

@adv95576 ?, my apologies what my post means when I said "having a sim", should have been understood as, having connected, you were definitely right there - there is still no sim card at SMART back then. I was 'lined' at SMART in 1995 when I bought my very first fone, which is a Nokia 636, then moved to GLOBE after a year or two, when I saw the exodus of majority of the people to that network. |

no need to apologise... i'm just clarifying. =)
btw, we also have two units of nokia 636, hehehe
you can also try going to the site specified below, and see if there really was an "exodus" of subscribers during the years you mentioned... go to the page that shows a graph of the number of cellular subscribers

Hi ! kelan ba i-li-lift ng globe ang pagbla-block nila sa ibang web/wap sites, kakainis kasi wala namang magandang links sa sites nila para sa mga SE Phones puro pang-Nokia lang , not like before nung hindi pa nila bina-block ung other wap sites , i can change my phone themes whenever i want kasi dami kang mabi-visit na wap site where you can download themes directly to your phone without the use of computer & cables. |

I guess that will never happen anymore.
Because you just have to change the apn to internet.globe.com.ph to access the other sites (of course you will be charged this time). |

@arki
Well i do hope that Globe always do that to their customers...yun nga lang bka hangang closing of the sale only and wala ng after sales service yan.From my experience with globe (as prepaid) again and again, when it comes to their customer service followups/feedbacks to querries,in my book, their service is very poor. They dont even call you back. And as like with all the angst here and in other threads, what is the use of having free surfing if it is only limited to globe wap site and yahoo.I stopped being a Globe user just early this year when theyve blocked all the sites.
