That external antenna makes that Nokia phone look ugly. They should seriously take it off.

UMTS is not the 3rd generation of GSM. At least not yet.
3G does not stand either for 3rd generation of GSM.

3G stands for the 3rd generation of mobile communication system.

1G is analog systems.
2G is GSM + associated data technology (CSD, HSCSD).
2.5G is denoted as GPRS, though it's still a based on 2G GSM technology, and is the peer of HSCSD in the packet side.
EDGE, an evolution of GSM data (HSCSD+GPRS) is referred to as 3G/2.5G. It depends how it is considered. But because the core network remains a 2G core network, EDGE is not really 3G, but is a step towards UMTS. At least service-wise, EDGE offers good opportunities, and is in this sense comparable to UMTS.

EDGE can deliver speed efficiency over UMTS which is interesting.
