DJ Deutsche Telekom's T-Mobile To Launch MMS in UK in June
LONDON (Dow Jones)--Deutsche Telekom AG's (DT) T-Mobile International (G.TMO) unit is to launch its multimedia messaging service, or MMS, for mobile phones in the U.K. in June, a senior T-Mobile executive said Thursday.
It will offer from mid-May the T68i handset to support the service, Harris Jones, chief executive of T-Mobile in the U.K., said. The handset is made by a Sony Corp. (SNE) and Ericsson (ERICY) joint venture.
In July, it will offer Nokia Corp.'s (NOK) MMS-enabled 7650 phone, he said.
T-Mobile didn't disclose its prices for supplying the MMS service, although it said it would probably be a flat fee, with no charge per message. The company would attempt to move users onto per-message charging later, it said.
Jones said T-Mobile had a company-wide target to reap 25% of its revenue from data services by 2005.
Jones was speaking to reporters on the rebranding of the T-Mobile network in the U.K., which was previously known as One2One.
Speaking at the same event, Deutsche Telekom Chairman Ron Sommer said no date had been set for T-Mobile International's partial flotation, intended to reduce the German carrier's debts.
The company also announced a roaming tariff named "WorldClass" on which customers could make calls across 25 countries using a single rate.
