Hi guys

has anyone got one of these yet? Am considering the idea (seeing as the t610 camera is useless in any dim light), but am not keen on parting with £40 for it just yet. Any opinions welcome.

Hi and welcome to Esato. There are already loads of comments on this but since the Esato search is having some difficulties at the mo I cannot supply you with any links to those threads.

I suggest you do a search when the system is less active as there are sample pics in those threads too.

In the meantime I can recall that most are happy with the slight improvements the cam gives but most sample pics I have seen have not made me want to rush out and buy one!

It's OK. Helps at night but don't expect miracles. Works only at close range. It's actually not a flash but LED light (it's got 6 white LEDs), and they are super bright. Don't try looking at them, you'll be blinded for some time. You can activate it and take pictures by pressing the button located on the "flash". No need for pressing the camera button on the phone. In the Conectivity->Accessories menu you can choose three modes: continuos light (works great as a torch light); stroboscope (just like in the club - cool effect); SOS (blinks SOS in morse code). Hope I helped.

A little update...

Here's a pic taken in "night mode"...

... and the same one taken with "flash"

The little pouch on pic is what you get with the flash. Looks nice and protects it.

I have been quoted GBP39.99 for it at Carphone Warhouse in Leeds (UK) and it is GBP39.99 on sonyericsson.com too. Will look around. I reckon expansys.com may be cheaper.

(Also got the R3C upgrade a couple of days back - is it me or has it improved the camera a bit?)

Thanks to all for the replies

*grin*

having checked expansys.com, they are indeed doing it cheaper - GBP30.00+VAT. So still GBP35+.

They are getting as bad as Nokia for having expensive accessories

I got mine from the Orange shop for £34.99. Still TOO expensive. It works wonders in pitch black though (as long as the subject is less than a meter away. Otherwise it's useless. I dissagree about night mode, if anything it makes the picture even worse!

I agree SE do rip you off charging £40 for 6 white LEDs! Still, I couldn't resist and lashed out £40 on one and well, I think it was worth it. True you can use it as a flash (which is only minimally effective so don't get your hopes up if you're a pro photographer (as if you would be using a T610!)). Also I've found that if you're using the timer setting on the camera the flash doesn't trigger in time with the camera so you can't use it on that setting.

However, what makes the Flash unit worth buying is its torch functionality. It has 3 options on the accessories menu:
Continuous - Excellent as a torch when you're drunkenly trying to find your way home. Also the batteries will never go flat unnoticed, like a normal torch. It lasts for ages too
Stroboscope - Kewl for when you're in the pub getting drunk and some dancey music comes on and you turn on your mini strobe and start dancing (ahem!)
SOS - Morse code SOS - when all else fails after getting lost on some bleak mountainside when drunk, you can flag down a passing helicopter.

Unfortunately you can't use the phone whilst the flash is in torch/accessory mode but there you go, life isn't perfect, huh

All in all, great! Glad I bought it, even if it was the full £39.99, and far better than any nok accessory
