There's no reason for SE to provide software upgrade for P800 to P900. No incentives, unless they want to hurt their P900 sales.

Oh no, not again...

Please stop these pointless posts about things that you think or wish would happen. Soon this will turn into a 10-page thread with posts both for and against someones 'certain facts'. (like the MS DUO/pro junk)

Thats probobly cause they sold T68m as an MMS enabled phone
but it was without MMS functionality so they had to give ppl
the opertunity to upgrade it with the latest software.

If they hadn't runned ads saying T68m had MMS they prolly wouldn't
have bothered upgrading them. (My guess)

One reason for them doing this is that it would instantly created a bigger market for developers to write applictions for UIQ 2.1 and Java MIDP 2.0. As it is now, with few handset available, developer have no incentive to write applications for the P900.

I still don't think this is enough of a reason for greedy SE, but some bad press from unhappy P800 owners "may" have a "slight" chance. Certainly better than doing nothing, because then we will get nothing.

Petition for UIQ 2.1 on the P800

Firstly, let me lay my cards on the table: I really hope that SE give us an update that makes our phone comparable with the P900.

1. T68 Scenario
---------------

The T68 thingy was slightly different to now. Then the T68 was the first colour screen phone to mass market with MMS etc etc.

The networks were desperate for hardware to sell in order to push the multimedia services.

SE obliged by updating the features of the T68 so that there was a wider market of people with high end mobile pone features.

The market is slightly different now. There is already a massive user group out there with MMS, gprs, colour screens etc etc. There is no longer the need to give that WOW!! factor to people (by way of upgreades) coz these features are pretty common place now.

Also the gap between the release of the T68 and T68i was just a matter of a few weeks. To some extent they had no choice but to offer the upgrade or seriously p*ss people off. On the other hand the gap between the release of the P800 and the P900 has been much wider - almost a year in many markets.

2. Commercial reality - why upgrade the P800 - suicide
-----------------------------------------------------

Yes, I agree with this.

It would be stupidity in the extreme for them to upgrade the P800 so that it can function like the P900.

However, if they decide to do so, and I think they may well do so - if only to keep us all on board for the next P series phone - they won't do so until say around February 2004 at the earliest.

The reason for this is that they want all the magazine reviews, internet reviews, word of mouth reviews, Christmas and New Year Sales to kick in (and to see if they can get some P800 users to upgrade)so that they can make a good return on their product.

Only after the dust has settled will they then service us P800 users (and in any event, they will have an idea by then who are the hardcore stubborn P800 users who aren't gonna buy the P900 no matter what).

So don't expect anything major before February 2004.

3. Upgrade features
-------------------

Well, it is clear from the design of the firmware of the P900 that we will NEVER get all of the P900 features - there simply isn't room in the ROM of the P800 to fit it all.

What we may get is cut down versions of what is on the P900 and in some cases there will be features that we just can't have.

Don't forget that the T68 to T68i upgrade wasn't really a complete upgrade i.e. it didnt really give the entire feature set. For example the later CommuniCam worked with all features on the T68i but not on the T68.

There you have it, for what its worth, my take on this issue.

Guys Guys Guyz be patient have u read my post !!! It says that SE going to release new updates after p900 release and the new p800 updates will have the p900 interface from video recorder themes new video player and new explorer and that after when i talked to SE service yesterday.

And just who told you this? Everyone else at SE is saying "no plans for..." Unless it is some official SE statement committing to this, it's just ANOTHER rumour!

OMG...

Off course SE won't make this stuff for the p800, are you all dumb ??

Seriously...

Maybe some other software developer will, but it will not be SE...
And then som say that everything is possible after QUICKOFFICE has been released, but hey... IT WAS NOT SE THAT MADE QUICKOFFICE..

And this thing with the themes is also bullsh**t.
If the p800 should be able to change themes as the p900, then it would need UIQ 2.1.

Come on... don't be so naive...
This guy is just guessing!

And those thinking of the case with t68, would also know (if they saw the t68 when it was officialy released) they said it would have mms and call picture and so! that is why the software was available for it. The t68i was only realeased because Sony wanted a part of it too....

plev: i disagree with what you said about the communicam working on the t68. You talking about the special effects and digital zoom function on the MCA-25 cam. They DID work on the T68 as long as you had firmware R6A or later.

Whos to say that the entire ROM capacity of the P900 is used? I mean who knows how much of it is being used and how much of it is spare?

I would think that there's a good reason for a bigger ROM. The new UIQ has more advanced gfx and features so it's natural to believe that it takes more space. Why increase the ROM if there's no need? It can't be used for anything but firmware anyway. That would add to the the cost of the device for no reason.

So the question is really whether SE doesn't want or isn't capable of doing it. Or both for that matter.
