How does BT range work? 100m dongle & 10m P800 |

Could someone confirm how the range of a bluetooth device works please? I have a P800 which has a 10m range on it - if I was to buy a 100m dongle, presumably I would still only be able to use the P800 within 10m? Because outside this range the P800 will be able to receive signals from the PC but not able to send anything back?
So therefore it's not worth buying a 100m dongle to use with my P800?? I've tried searching "bluetooth range" but got a load of results and not much luck finding the right thing! |

I believe you are correct in your assumptions but given the negligable price difference between 10m and 100m range BT dongles you may as well stick with the 100m as other devices or future phones you buy may well then support that also.

The working range is the worst device's range. Pour exemple: if your téléphone's range is 10m, the connection will works on 10m.

You're correct about the range. But 100m could be useful.. if you have two computers or if you would buy a SE Z1010 which will have 100m bluetooth range. |

i expect that you've got the point by now, but 10m is as far as it'll work

Thanks guys - I will probably go for 100m anyway based on that info. At the risk of straying from the topic, does anyone know of any decent 100m dongles available in the UK? I want one which is made by a company I have heard of! Had a 10m one but it was made by some spurious company and the drivers were a little, erm, erratic, shall we say? Thanks very much. |

Well, bluetooth for computers is pretty useless... because at 1mbps, it takes ages to transfer anything but small 10kb files...
Well if you plan on getting a Z1010 then maybe it would be worthwhile because it has 100m bluetooth, but until then I would not... |

I don't find bluetooth between computers useless. It's perfect for browsing the internet with a laptop/PDA through your main computer/gateway.
Regarding a good brand, I highly recommend Bluetakes products.

But there are many others as well. The MSI dongle has gotten very positive comments on this site. I haven't tried that one myself though |

Yep Bluetake are a good brand to go for....I have a Bluetake dongle (10M) and works just fine with my t68i
The only problem that I have with this "gotta put 100M in phones" thing is BATTERY LIFE!!??!!?!?! I certainly agree with the fact it would be nice but do we really need it?
100M range has got to chew battery Bring on the really small but VERY powerful batteries!!! |

10m is only a theoretical maximum in ideal conditions. i sometimes have problem connecting at around 5m in "noisy" environments.

A shame, a great shame that it's the least powerful device that limits the distance.
An example; there aren't any phones or BT headsets I know of with greater than 10m range. This means you can't walk around the house wirelessly making a VoIP phone call.
It's a shame that the power isn't supplied by the base unit.
Also, what about ac-hoc networks? Can this be used to increase the range of a 10m class2 device? |
