Just tell me, why on earth everyone can upgrade Siemens phones (like SL45 or ME45) firmware using nothing but a PC and cable, and Ericsson/SE phones must be taken to service center?! Ain't it unfair? |

This MAY change when SE launches a Java phone.......

Perhaps SE don't want people to examine the software and let the competitors find out its secrets or copy parts of its operating systems for free. |

The original SL45 and ME45 are not Java enabled ..... just upgraded my cousin's SL45 2 days ago with firmware V52. A 10 mins job and it's now a SL45i with Java This is what I call user-friendly .... |

But to upgrade your SL45 is actually not endorsed, nor legal according to Siemens! I've done it myself to, upgraded my SL45 -> SL45i. It was a quick and easy job, but if you have warranty left on your phone, it will most likely void it!

In my own opinion, you can do that by Siemens and not by Ericsson just because they are far better programmers by Siemens !!!
By Siemens, you can also since long ago :
- remove the operator name on the screen
- have the street, city and zip fields in the contacts
- a really fast T9, knowing when to put an apostrophe...
and just to have those really basic functions by SE, we’ll have to wait an eternity…!!! (I’m not sure they’ll reach that once, because by SE… they are just “bellow zero”…!!!)
For me, a soon as Siemens will come with a tri-band color phone, I’ll throw away my T68… (I HATE the T9 on the T68…!!!)

I'll agree with you that Siemens have better software when it comes to the basic functions of a phone! In the beginning my SL45 had some bugs, but they were all sorted out quite fast. The only big gripe with it was that checking the "inbox" of your sms's were slllloooowwww!! I mean REALLY SLOW, but only when an MMC-card was present.
Other than that, I'll agree with you that the T9 works a lot better on the Siemens, and that it's a well-built software! I still like my SL45 which I upgraded to SL45i myself, and I'm using it at the moment while my Ericsson T68m is at the service center, for the fourth time!

I agree that the siemens t9 is better than the t68's. Some words can't be saved in the t68. and It's a good thing you can upgrade your siemens online by yourself

I have discussed software upgrading issue with a SonyEricsson engineer that I know. The reason SE doesn't allow you to do software upgrades yourself is because of the risk of people tampering with the software.
If someone hacks the firmware for a phone this could lead to huge security issues on the mobile phone networks. A hacked mobile phone software has the pontential to bring the networks down.
BTW I do not agree that the Siemens software is better than the SonyEricsson software. Ok I haven't used a S55 so I can't comment on that one, but I had a Siemens ME45 and I didn't like that software, the menu structure was not consistent. Sometimes the "yes" alternative was on the left option button and sometimes on the right, which made me press the wrong option sometimes. Also the wap-browser seemed to use a whole differnent kind of user interface which was not consistent with the rest of the menu system.
Other than that it was an ok phone. But SonyEricsson software is far more flexible. The menu system is easier to navigate, and it has lots of handy features which makes it sooo much easier to use. Just look at stuff like dynamic menus which PCControl for example uses that is just one feature that makes SonyEricsson stand out of the crowd. |

The No/Yes thing still lingers in the S55, I understand this when it comes to deleting things, then it has sense, but at other times you end up cancelling out of the menu.
The wap browser does seem to be separate to the phone, also, the wap browser is very slow when a connection is active, the phone beeps like mad when typing as you run out its key buffer, disconnect and go to 'go to address' and its all fast again |
