Those of you who have fast internet connection (broadband/lan) probably noticed a slight slowdown after installing bluetooth. The reason why is because the BlueTooth stack installs something called "Lan access server driver". It does not present a problem in itself, however there is a place (in windows) where you define the order in which the connections are tried. Windows follows this order for every connection. When this driver is installed, it becomes first in the list, so windows will try the bluetooth connection before trying the LAN/internet connection, therefore you get a tiny delay before every connection.
In order to optimize connections as well as possible, the connection used most often (internet/lan) should be the first in the list.
To change the order you have to:
1. open "Network Connections"
2. click "Advanced" (menu)
3. choose "Advanced Settings"
4. make sure your internet/lan connection is the first in the list, by selecting it, and pressing the up arrow.

...Hope this info is of some use...
If I had all the answers, I wouldn't have any questions.

Agreed, and very good advice, but in general more applicable to people who have their dongle permanantly connected.

If like me, you have a laptop where you only plug the USB dongle in when you are actually going to use it then you may as well leave these settings unchanged because the lan option only appears when you have the dongle plugged in.

Also, if like me, when you plug it in you are going to dial out via then having it in the first position will be your preferred choice anyway.

@masseur:
The "lan access server driver" is used only for networking over bluetooth, and has nothing to do with common bluetooth operation. As a matter of fact, I've disabled this driver after I installed bluetooth, and never missed it. The problem with this driver is that it installs itself as a network card. It's always there, even when the dongle is unplugged (it simply shows "cable unplugged" message). This driver is also not used when you are using a phone as a modem over bluetooth.
When you use your phone as a bluetooth modem, windows creates a dial-up connection (external connection), so none of the network interfaces (including the bluetooth lan access server driver) are used. The PC connects to the phone via the BT serial port.
I have tested this extensively, and there is no decrease in functionality of my bt dongle after I completely disabled the lan access driver. (I will have to enable it again if I ever plan to network 2 pcs over bt)
If I had all the answers, I wouldn't have any questions.

ooops... you are quite correct, dunno what I was thinking of first thing this morning! for some reason I was connecting lan with dial-up which is nonesense!

I use a Sony bluetooth dongle and it is interesting that the BT lan driver is not there when the dongle is not plugged in.

thanks for the clarification!

edit: actually I'm quite embarrased by this mistake and I guess I really was this time very much mistaken!

slow day huh?

I had so many people PM me to ask what it meant so I just chose a random link that came up on a google search so people could see where that came from.

Did you get Murray Walkers F1 commentary in Norway? If not you may not understand how fitting that expression was for him!
