hi guys....

i've been searching the forum and all over the net abt this but still didn't find anything abt it.

the speed that i get while surfing the net on my pc thru the phone via bluetooth is really pathetic. it ranges from 1.5 kB/sec to 2.5 kB/s i.e. 12 kilobits/sec to a max of 20 kilobits/sec. its never gone over that.

another peron i know is on the same network and gets abt 6-7 kB/sec avg speed. now how does he get such speed and i don't!! he connects thru a nokia with a usb data cable.

here are a couple of details abt what i'm using:

location : india
network : orange
bt : billionton class1 bluetooth adapter
sytem : winxp running on a P4
phone : t610

so somebody pls tell me abt two things:

is there any settings that can be tweaked, be it gprs or modem, so that i get a faster speed?

is bluetooth the bottleneck here? would i be getting a good spped if i were to use a data cable? if yes, is bluetooth so bad with gprs??

thanx in advance guys... i really need ur help here.

This was the answer I gave to someone last week on this same subject and that sorted it for him.

thanx... but it is already set to that.

is there any other hidden settings or anything i can do to increase the speed.

whats the avg speed ppl get while surfing the net thru their phones via bluetooth? i really wanna know if its coz of bluetooth as the medium of connection between the phone and the comp.

http://www.exosyphen.ro/f_gprs/index.html - it is due to be launched in the next days. We are experiencing 2-3 times faster and less traffic gprs

thats fine but that doesn't help his actual problem because he should be getting 6-7 kb/sec, like his friend and myself, before looking for other alternatives such as yours.

with the T610 it uses 4 slots for download which gives a theoretical maximum 64 kbits/s which is 8kb/sec but obviously there is also overhead involved.

Alternatives like mine cause less traffic paid at a higher speed. You might know that channels are allocated only if thenetwork is not to loaded.

@masseur

isn't that the data transfer speed that can be achieved with bluetooth. won't it differ when u use ur phone as a modem and the incoming data that come via gprs is sent to the pc? but i still don't think it should be as slow as i'm experienceing it, there ought to be a something that could be done to get things working properly.

no, thats the bandwidth available on GPRS. Bluetooth bandwidth is much higher so GPRS is the limiting factor.

I do this all the time and get the sorts of speeds quoted.

If you are sure the pc bluetooth modem speed is set correctly then I have no other suggestions as that fixed it for me when I had this problem. For some reason it always seems to default to 19200 until you change this setting.

I have just spent some time testing this and I did a few downloads and got around 6.5kb/sec on downloads and doing the bandwidth speed test I got a result of 8.4kb/sec (which in itself is interesting).

good luck!

6.5kb/s!!! 8.4kb/s!!! u just had to rub it in, didn't u

why don't i get that kinda speed?

nothing wrong on the network side as someone else is getting the same speed as u r on my network. my reception if full where i stay i.e. i get all the bars.

nothing wrong with the phone coz u got the same phone.

my bluetooth adaptor is a pretty good one so i don't doubt that either.

i'm really stumped what's going wrong here! i just got 21 kilobits/sec on the test, which is less than a third of what u got!!

well i'll get to the end of this, will post here if i find anything.

thanx for ur help.

@masseur

could u pls tell me the settings on ur comp and phone, changing mine to them if they're different might hopefully do the trick. so could u pls tell me the following settings on ur system:

comp settings:
are the following enabled or disabled under modem settings:
1) hardware flow control
2) modem error control
3) modem compression
4) software compression (ppp settings)

phone settings:
under connectivity>data comm>data accounts>(account name)>edit>advanced settings:
over here is authentication set to normal, secure or high.
is data compression on or off.
is header compression on or off.
under quality of sevice:
is precedence - subscribed, high, normal or low.
delay - subscribed, class1, class2, class3 or best effort.
reliability - class 1-5 (mine is set at class3)
peak rate - subscribed, class 1-5
mean rate - subscribed, class 1-5

sorry for bothering u but this seems to be my last chance of setting things right.

thanx.

my appologies, I did not see your previous request.

I am runing XP pro btw.

my bluetooth modem is set to compression disabled and flow control is hardware. I don't see settings for modem compression or modem error control so that will be the modem defaults

on phone...
data compression is off
headér compression is off
precedence subscribed
delay subscribed
reliability class 3
peak rate subscribed
mean rate subscribed

I kinda have the same problem, eventhough I set the option to max (115200) on the comp.
Still, I usually begin d/l @ 20 kb/s, end end up around 800 b/s!!!
I can't figure out why?..

thanx a lot mate, don't know how u manage it but i must say u consistently do a great job of helping everyone out. i don't think there'd be any regular visitor of this forum who doesn't know abt u.

as for the settings, i have the same settings for the pc and the phone, so still don't know whats going wrong. will try to get a hold of a data cable and try it out.

thanx again.

Hi boys,
Well i have been using GPRS (but nokia 6310 -excuse me!) for the past 6 months on airtels connection, before i used data cable but now replaced with bluetooth,The speed is Max 5 kb/s but average aroud 2 or 3 kbps.with blue tooth it is better to use the phone's modem with bluetooth serial port.and all the modem and port settings being the default.I have tried all types of settings and At commands but the result is same!.But give the modem speed to the maximum,

I would like to get the response from anyone who use AT commands for nokia for changing GPRS class, may it help,
