An Indian friend visiting the US asked me to find her a GMS phone here to take back to India to use there with a locally bought sim card.
All the info I see tells me if I get a trimode or quadmode I should be fine. I'm looking at quadmode phones just to be sure its usable anywhere.
Two questions arise for me...

1) Just because it has a quadmode frequency capability, will an Indian provider not want to service certain model/makes of phone? It seems not all carriers in the US will service all quadphone models.

2) Instead of spending $100 in the US on a phone on ebay that "should" work in India, would she be better off with me giving her the $$$ to just buy a phone in India.

Thanks for any input....

You will need to unlock your phone. You can call t-mobile and usually they do it for you if you tell them that you are going to India (for good)

Does anyone have experience with Nokia 5300? If it works in India. Any advantage to having a quad band again triband. In countries like USA, India which have only specific frequencies? Thanks

Yes, nokia 5300 works here.
With a quad band you can go any corner of the world.
Though nokia 5300 is tri band you can still use it in india while roaming.

Does Nokia 6682 work in India? I've seen NOkia 6681 in India with GSM 900.I brought my 6682 in US from Cingular with GSM850 and I want to use it in India.

Is there anyway that I can use my phone in India with software upgrades/whatever it takes to.

The Nokia 6682 will work on any network that offers GSM 1800, provided the phone is unlocked. There is no software upgrade to change the GSM frequencies on the phone. Sorry.

The GSM 900 MHz frequency using now all most worldwide. 900 MHz means the range is approx. 880 MHz - 970 MHz. (880 - 915 Uplink, 935 - 970 Downlink).

So, Now a days all mobiles supporting this frequncies.

Triband = 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 1900 MHz.
or we can say GSM, DCS, 3G.

The triband mobile is suitable for all networks even 3G (Video call & High speed Internet).

It's not the same 900 and 850, if anyone wants to use a cellphone in any country just to be sure the mobile support 850/900/1800/1900 QUad-band GSM. but if you wanna use 3G, the mobile need support 850/1900/2100 Triband UMTS/HSDPA.

The Nokia N85 has Quad Band GSM (850-900-1800-1900) and Triband 3G HSDPA (850-1900-2100)

Is a good option.
