This is a small tutorial in just a few steps:
1. Download this file.. http://www.tangshop.com/lib/tang-shop/wd-pl2303-v1.5.0.0.zip
2. Install to a directory of choise..
3. Plug in the cable
4. Go to Device Manager in Control Panel -> System
5. Click the question mark (in Other Devices) where it says "Unknown USB Device" and choose update driver.
6. Choose install from a list or specified location, and click your way to the folder you unzipped the file to. Click OK
7. Choose Phone Monitor Options in Control Panel and Activate And Book COM3 (Most often this will be your assigned COM-port, if not, check wich COM port that got assigned in the Device Manager) and voilá, it works

If it doesn't work now try and remove the cable and insert it again,
and make sure youinstalled proper phone connector program.
oh, and make sure the phone is connected to the cable

This should work on all generic cables, and on all OS:es, although, for Windows other that XP/2000 use this driver: http://www.tangshop.com/lib/tang-shop/USBwin98-98se-me-2k.zip
and MAC use this one: http://www.tangshop.com/lib/tang-shop/md-pl2303-v1000..zip.tgz

Oh, and I've seen many guys here having problems with this and even more guys that tries to help so this is the way, email me for more help.
btw, if your phone starts charging your battery, it works Don't listen to the guys saying it doesn't..

Might wanna make this one sticky
