Region free DVD player on your PC? |

Does anyone have or knows about any programs that will allow you to play import DVDs on your PC?
I've tried DVD region free, that works but I don't have the cash to spend $40 on a program.
So if any of you guys know of a free program that can do this I would be most grateful, thanx. |

I use and thoroughly recommend DVD Idle Pro from the same people that do DVD Region Free.
If you don't want to pay that check out the The Firmware Page and see if they have a region free firmware update for your drive.

I've heard from one person that when you watch a DVD using DVD region free that there is a pause every now and again as the program trys to play the DVD because of the small cache. Is this true? |

With DVD region free I did not ever see a pause but when I upgraded to DVD Idle Pro and used the caching facility of this I did find it paused alot.
Recently they have introduced a newer version of DVD Idle Pro with an improved caching which has fully removed this pause problem.

A little off-topic, but does anyone here know what you need to play dvds on ur pc? I've got a dvdrom unit, winxp and so on, but when I put a dvd in the unit and mediaplayer starts i get a message saying that i need a dvd codec. Where do i get one of those? Thx in advance.

Shouldn't windows download one of those automatically?
Try downloading a program made for playing DVDs, that might help.
I recommend WinDVD. |

I've tried DVD genie and it doesn't work, it'll only work if I alter the firmware of my DVD drive. Which I don't know how to do. |

Thats correct. DVD Genie is only for altering the DVD software player. In RPC-1 DVD players (pre 2001) this would be enough, but with RPC-2 drives and later you need to change the firmware to be multi region but still need to use something like DVD Genie to let the software know the region.
I posted a link earlier in this thread to what is pretty much the authoratitive pages on the internet for multi region firmware patches, but of course you do it at your own risk. I have upgraded several drives using patches from there and experienced no problems.

I've got two questions
1. How do I update the firmware?
2. If I can't, how long will it take to get the activation code for DVD region free after I've paid up? |

ok. well for 1... generally you need to update from DOS and usually need to make a DOS bootable disk. The region free firmware for each manufacturer is different so you will have to consult the instructions given when you download the region free firmware.
for registering DVD region free you will get the activation code within 24 hours as I recall but you get 30 days trial with 15 minutes run time to make sure it will work for you so give it a try! I think its fantastic and by far the eastiest and risk free way to play mtulti region DVDs. (and no I am not affiliated in any way with them! I just hink its a great product)

When I get the activation code and activate the program do I have or register it any further or do I just need the activation code?
As I am a little worried that if I am force to reformat my hard drive because of a virus etc, that I will have to pay for the activation code again as the activation code will have already been registered. |

(sigh) no.. they will glady send you the registration code again if you need it and in fact regularly update their registration code system and send you a new one because of people using keygen programs.
I think these sort of questions are better asked of them, not me, since I do not have any relationship with them except to be a very happy user.
