i dont know how it works in US/Canada ! Here in Asia, every company gives you a different SIM. As long as your SIM is not changing, you will have the same number... |

It's different for different contries. For example, here in Norway, it's the person who owns the phonenumber, not the phone company, so we can keep the phone number when switching providers.
[EDIT]
You can get a different SIM and still keep the same phone number. The phone number has nothing to do with the SIM card.

This keeping your phone number when moving between carriers is called mobile number portability. UK have had it for a few years and Australia started it 2 years ago. Before that if you changed carrier you lost your number and had to get a new one.

USA will start allowing number portability in a few mmonths i believe. You have to request to keep your old number when you sign up for your new provider. You have to do this BEFORE your old number is taken out of servioce with your old provider.
The new provider may ask you for a fee. It may take up to 2 months to get it all arranged (you get another number in between)
The number will always be property of the old provider, and the new provider will have to pay a fee for using this number on their network.
That's how it is my NL anyway.

2 months? wow. In Australia they do it same day or within 24 hours anyway and are legally obliged to do it with 3 days by the telcoms authority!

In UK, it takes you a week to do. 2 days for getting PAC and 5 days for transferring |

One of the reasons for changing carriers is the people you call mostly are on another network, and cross network calls can be quite expensive. As far as I have been able to find out, if you take your old number to another network, people on the new network will still be paying x-network when they call you, eventhough u;re on the new network. Think of this before goign along this route.
In the USA, from wot i understand, Cellphone companies do not have a dedicated dial code (like 078877 for my Vodafone in the uk), for example, NewJersey is 973, your cellphone will also start with 973 (though ofcourse, you can choose any statecode you want. This has the added advantage that since local calls are free in the US, ppl can call you for free even on a cell phone (though ur incoming minutes do get consumed). .... right.. i know I had a point here... will get back as soon as I figure out wot it was...
