I've finally got a Bluetooth USB adaptor for my laptop and I love bluetooth! Can transfer all my pics and ringtones to my PC for a backup, sync with Outlook too!
Finally got Orange PAYG Internet GPRS working too so now I'm in the library typing this message through the GPRS connection... not a wire in site!
Haven't managed a successful bluejack yet, that's still on the cards though... I connected to a T610 of someone on the bus a few days ago but accidently sent my business card! A few hours later I got a text saying "Who is this!", lol.
Ahh... wireless rocks. It really does. |

It's a Bluetake one, this is the one:
http://www.bluetake.com/Products/poke2thbt009.htm
Bought it from Maplins in the UK for £29.99 (was on special offer I think).
Installed without a hitch, excellent software with support for file transfer, dial up networking, sync etc. etc. etc. Security settings so you can make sure only certain devices can connect to your PC. It just works perfectly. Good comprehensive help file included too.
The only annoying thing is the dongle has a flashing bright blue light on it, so as I leave my laptop on at night on my desk I have to pull the dongle out so it doesn't flash and drive me crazy! Hehe
I think Orange pre-pay charge £4 per Mb for GPRS data, I think I'll use my O2 contract SIM instead in the future and subscribe to a data bundle from them if I plan to be using this reguarly.
When I said no wires I meant almost no wires - being very cheeky and plugged my laptop into a power outlet, hehe.
Edit: Just did a speed test at Bandwidthplace.com and it came out at 71kbps. But browsing it feels the same speed as a 56k modem. Not as good as my broadband at home but definately better than GSM 9.6kbps or even worse... no Internet at all!
I'll try downloading something (small!) to get a feel for how fast it is at sustained transfer.
Jonathan.

I prefer the BToes Bluetooth dongle from MSI.
I got it for about $40, which is extremely cheap around here. Check it out. |

Errr. here in israel bluetooth is not authorised, so we have to wait for 2 months until they authorise it. or we could buy pireted hardware at high prices. :/

Just a note about BT dongle on laptops. I have one and it works great (from CSR). No problems with it. The only thing I don't like is that I have to connect it (USB), and physically disconnect it whenever I bring my laptop around (as it won't fix in my bag). Also have to be careful not to break it as it sticks out on the back of my laptop (USB connection).
Maybe I should have purchased a PCMCIA version instead. It would be better since I don't need to remove it all the time. If you have a PC, then the USB dongle works well. But if you're using a laptop, you might want to evaluate whether you carry your laptop around a lot (that's the whole purpose of a laptop - mobility )...
Just my 2 cents... |

Coz bluetooth is used by the israeli army and my gues is they would not be too pleased if their tanks got blue jacked by some cell phone
Imagine..... instead of toy car you'd be controlling missiles and tanks
fatach: do you mean bt is gonna be available on cell phones then after all??

Yes I've noticed that too, I have to pull the dongle out otherwise it is a bit loose. The laptop will fit in my bag with the dongle attached but I would be afraid of leaving it attached. Though with Plug-n-Play it's not really too much of an inconvenience. I just drop it one of the side pockets of my bag.
I take it out at night too as I leave my laptop sitting on my desk switched on and the blue flashing light would annoy the hell out of me!
Some people say they have problems with PCMCIA bluetooth adaptors as I recall from reading some posts? |

i agree!! bluetooth rocks! i bought my epox bluetooth dongle last june and i never regretted spending my hard-earned money for it. at first, i was choosing between a bt dongle and an ir port (the ir was cheaper than the bt), but i decided to go with the dongle. i think controlling my computer using my t68mi and pc control is the coolest thing in the world! |
