I've had some time now to play with the SE T62u on ATT's multinetwork plan. It's the best raw commincation, consumer subscription avaliable in California. The handset is rarley out of communication with a tower. The handset and plan aren't a substitute for the seamless nature or the bells and whistles of more convenional plans and handsets, but it is an excellent emergency device. If I had to purchase an emergency phone for a loved one, it would be the ATT multinetwork plan and a GAIT phone. The secret in California is that while ATT's TDMA network is mature, their old AMPS network is still intact and VERY complete. ATT's GSM side in California is very immature but the T62u can be user adjusted to exclude the two available GSM bands if you linger in a weak coverage area.
