Suffice to say I bought outright a VFL brnaded T610 but the store failed to mention the cripple-ware version of the firmware with all the VFL stuff locked in (even though I said I was going to use it with an Optus SIM)
When asking Vodafone about approved way to re-flash they say talk to SE
Contacted SE who say it can't be done.... they don't recommend re-flashing a VFL T610 as it may corrupt the handset and void the warrenty !
(does this just apply to VFL phones, applying crippled hardware as well, or do they just not trust their service agents ?!)
Has anyone been in the same position ? As it stands I'm going to have to go back to the store and see if they'll take it back.
Bad first experience with a SE phone

It've been told many times that service centre won't flash a vodafone live T610 into a unbranded T610.........too bad that you didn't know in first place !! Good luck !

still fuming that the dealer didn't mention the possible problem.
Not only is the VFL software invasive (can't even apply a theme over the fixed softkey that takes me to live) the icons are crap and the menus are littered with things I can't use !
I'd played with a prototype labelled T610 (if you check the link in my sig you'll see I work on Big Brother where we got to play with some neat toys from Optus !) and was impressed.... so when the show ended when looking for the cheapest T610 I could get my hands on... bad mistake !
As I've got a couple of meetings tomorrow SE and Vodafone have got til them to get back with some good news... or it's back to the store and walk out with a non VFL-live infected Nokia !
I'd have got an SL55 or a Nokia 7250 but neither of them have bluetooth
Shame really as the Nokias don't work so well with my Mac

Does the SL55 not have Bluetooth? The S55 does...

Looks like the smaller case / sliding frame, they decided to sacrifice the one thing that would have made buying it a no-brainer for me ! |

Yes you can flash a VFL T610. Before I got mine replaced I had it flashed with the VFL R1L. Just go to a certified Sony Ericsson dealer. (I took my to Alltech in WA).

geez,
enough to really piss you off.
Very disappointed with the SE responses so far... they keep pushing the buck back to Vodafone who, correctly, point out the warrenty etc is a SE thing and nothing to do with them, so they can't authorise the flashing of a phone !
BTW... how do I find out what firmware the phone thinks it's running ?

I think the final comment from me is from the last email I got from SE....
The VFL phone has been returned and replaced by a stock T610 (which appears to have a Bluetooth problem, but that's going to be a whole new saga !) so hopefully I can just get on with enjoying the phone.... hate to think what'll happen if anything goes wrong with this one !
Dear Zzarg,
If you can find a Certified Service Centre who is willing to load alternate software onto your phone, by all means take up their offer.
You will be charged for this service as Sony Ericsson will not cover this under Warranty.
You will also be required to sign a waiver because if the T610 faults as a result of this software change, it will not be covered by the Sony Ericsson Warranty.
Best Regards,
