Just thought I'd share what worked for me, then talk about some advanced software diddling at the end. Skip the opening if you've got this far.
First of all, ignore the CDs that came with the phone and the dongle. Go to the Belkin website and get the latest BT drivers (presently 1.2.2.16) and install those. Then install Mobile Phone Monitor from www.clubsonyericsson.com. Then grab the XTND Connect packet 4 from the same place, and install that.
Now go into Bluetooth devices, search for your phone and pair it. Try copying some photos around to check the BT's working. Then right click on "Serial Port 1" and note down the COM number.
Open MPM's Control Panel app and disable all COM ports other than COM3, which should be enabled and reserved.
Then fire up XTND and try to sync. It'll take about 10 seconds to find the phone - if you watch the BT symbol on the phone, you'll see it change from < to <> to show that it's making a serial connection. Once the phone's found, MPM will pop up and start quizzing you about the phone and SIM card names. Once all this is done, it should then sync correctly. It should work fine for the Image Editor, PC Control and other apps too.
Now, I thought it would be good to get rid of that annoying Bluetooth Tray icon, but it has to load to load the Bluetooth stack. But if you're comfortable editing the registry, you can have the Bluetooth stack load automatically without needing the tray icon - this gives you all the functionality you had before through Explorer, but without that annoying icon. Bonus.
Simply go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun
and create a new key pointing to BTStackServer.exe, which will be in the directory you installed the Bluetooth drivers to. Then remove BTTray from Startup and reboot. Tadaa! Full functionality with no annoying icon.
It's now solid as a rock for me, and works every time.
