From the default screen where you can see the date and time press the following keys...
> * < < * < * where < and > are joystick movements. click on service info and then sw information.
to get it updated you need to go to a sony ericsson service centre

Does SE provide a list anywhere which tells you the current version and the difference between the versions - ie whats new with each release or what has been fixed ?

that site only has t610s masseur. any suggestions to find the latest for t616? i've searched the SE website and couldn't find a list or anything on firmware and their "solution finder isn't working right now.

cytech keeps a list here but I guess its only for EU firmware.
I would check out posts on howard forums if I was you as there is no official (publicy accessible) firmware lists.
