Its the last piece of my jigsaw.
I've been lokking through the rom drives forever now and still cant find the image files that need to be replaced so i can change the image strips behind the icons at the top of the screen and the toolbar at the very bottom of the screen.

I asume its going to be in Z:\System\Data and one of the RSC or MBM files.
Does anybody know which i viewer i need to look at these files?

Ummmm....even if you DO find it the very definition of a ROM drive dictates that you can't change or replace the files.

You can find the bitmaps in z:\system\apps\appicker\appicker.mbm; browse with qfileman and hit the file with your stylus, it'll be opened in the image viewer.

Cheers,
found the bottom image its Z:\system\data\LSBWPDEFAULT.MBM

all we need is an app that disregards the fact that the Z: and A: are read only.

if the drives had files added to them when they were created something must be able to either remove the read only status or add by ignoring the read only part.

that would be a useful file manager.

An app that disregards the read only status, hmmm...

That depends whether these sections of memory are read only because of the system software or whether they are actually ROM chips. If it is the former then it might be possible to create an app such as you mentioned.

However, if these chips are actually ROM chips then the data that was put on them was put there as part of the manufacturing process and, although you can destroy it in various ways there is no way to add new data to those chips. Hence the term ROM (Read Only Memory), notice the important part, READ ONLY, no writing is possible after they are made.

Although, there might be another (DANGEROUS) way to change those pictures. It might be possible to write a piece of software that patches the OS and makes it look somewhere else for those pics, say in a directory that can be written to. If someone does that though, it won't be me.

Whats in a name???

Going on what egrieco said i wondered...

Orange (and now most users) place a shutdown.mp4, startup.mp4 and popcorn.wav in sysdata. these are the same names and file formats as in Z:\system\data (the default ones).

I've shoved a .jpg with matching size and name into sysdata and renamed it as a .MBM file, then rebooted.

It didnt work!

but is this because i'm using a renamed jpeg?

What is a .MBM file and what prog can prdouce these?

i dont think the rom drives are truly read only, otherwise we wouldnt be able to upgrade the firmware... right?
@kitp800 i did the exact same as you, renamed a jpeg and stuck it in sysdata, to no avail.
its gotta be possible to replace/remove these images.

a .mbm file is a collection of more than one BITMAP image in one single file. if you open the .mbm in the viewer on your p800, youll see that it is animated.... now if you could get some software that extracted the images, you can change one, and recompile it... then see what happens

nice one MixiN,

all we need now is that file manager that can ignore/bypass the Read only markers.

I'm using Colours Schemes by Psiloc as a theme editor and this adjusts all the default colours on the P800 indivually to my own spec.
I'm guessing that however it does it, it changes one of the .MBM files on the Z:\
If this is the case then it is possible to change the data on the ROM drives. Now, how do we get Psiloc to write a prog for changing the images on the P800??? Would this allow us to add an image behind the applications list aswell as the preference icons???

The color schemes can be replaced manually by replacing the file C:\system\data\colorscm.dat It is NOT on a ROM drive.
